Sandy's Turn...

I guess the encounter with the dog was too much for Sandy - she crashed big time with a huge bout of the flu on Thursday night. She had a really bad night and all day Friday she was in bed with some pretty major stomach pain and so on...we were starting to get quite concerned about her but last night she slept much better and today she was able to get up and around and seems to be coming out of this thing, whatever it was. Her energy is not nearly back yet and she still is experiencing stomach pain, but all in all it seems to be moving on, for which we are very thankful.
In the meantime, I headed out this morning to teach my first of two classes for the Bible Institute, only to return an hour later because of only one student showing up. The director and I decided to cancel the first class, which was to be "Ephesians." This gave me time to come home for a few hours and help out a little around the house so Sandy could keep resting (although she managed to teach school anyways - we are taking off some in a few weeks to go up to El Paso for a staff meeting so we are trying to work ahead a bit).
I went back after lunch and had five students for my "Basic Doctrine" class and it went really well. I was thankful for plenty of time for prep over the last month and also for a great group of students who are eager to learn. The students consist of one pastor, one recent convert (6 months ago), a teenager, a teacher and a middle-aged woman. Because the class happens only once a month I have prepared a bunch of homework for them - they think it is lots, more than other teachers have given them in the past, but I think it will work out well!
Please continue to pray for Sandy and her recuperation as well as for the two of us as we prepare a presentation for next Saturday for a "Couples Only" evening at our church. We are getting many opportunities to be involved in ministry here in Cuauhtemoc and the surrounding area.
We are also very excited to say that our kids have made a new friend - an 8 year old boy who lives on our block. He speaks a few words of English but our kids are having to work on their Spanish to be able to communicate with him. He is a very polite and well-behaved boy and we have also met his mom and dad who also are very kind and endearing people. Of course this is an answer to Andrew's prayer for a friend out here, it is a great opportunity for our kids to work on their Spanish, and it is an opportunity for us to shine the light of Christ into these people's lives, folks whom we think don't have a relationship with Jesus...yet!
We are looking forward to the worship service tomorrow in our church and then at 6 p.m. we are going to a youth event where we are having a "disco" supper together with them.

Here we go again!

My heart is still beating fast.

Last night Gerald and I decided that our dog, Roxie, wasn't getting enough exercise and that was causing some problems. So after school this morning the kids and I went out for about 30 minutes. Right before supper we decided that we would go for just a short walk again. As I did this morning, I carried a rock or two just in case we encountered some difficult dogs. This morning the walk went great. Tonight, well, we encountered some problems.

We were already on our way home on a quieter street when I noticed a yard with several dogs all behind a nice high fence. I was keeping an eye on them when I saw one of the dogs push the gate open and head straight for us. Now I was scared. The dog came straight for Roxie, took one sniff and proceeded to try to bite Roxie - I let go of the leash and they took off. Olivia and Andrew started crying, I think I was yelling ( it all happened so fast I am not really sure what happened. )

The point of the story is this - God's care for us. We were on the only quiet street that I know of around here. If it had been any other street and I let go of the leash most likely Roxie would have run into the street and been hit. Secondly God sent an angel in the form a big kind Mexican man who was there before I even saw him coming. He stopped his pickup told the kids in English "Don't worry", picked up a big metal rod out of the back of his pickup and headed towards the dogs. By now the dogs were just starring at each other, he sent the other dog towards home and stood between us and the other dog until the owner came out and took the dog back into the fence and latched the gate. Then he turned to me and in perfect English told me it was ok to go on and asked me if the kids were ok.

We walked home. Before we even got into the house the kids were all trying to tell Gerald at once what had happened. I burst into tears and told Gerald I was not doing that again. If he doesn't come along then Roxie is staying home. I can't handle another episode - twice is more than enough for me.

But I am well aware of how the Lord took care of us this afternoon. Thank you Jesus!

I am going to go finish the supper dishes and get the kids showered and to bed at a decent hour tonight.

A Cry Solves Everything... well almost!

Well it seems Olivia has turned the corner - PTL! She had a good sleep last night and a good two hour nap today. She hasn't had a fever since yesterday. She is still congested and not quite her cheerful self. But, the worst has passed. She even told me that her throat doesn't hurt today.

The boys spent the afternoon practicing soccer shots on each other outside while Olivia was sleeping. I decided to take the opportunity to sweep and mop the living room. Part of it was cleaned this morning with a spilled bowl of cereal.

I had a good long cry yesterday. I couldn't put a finger on any one thing, just lots of little things. Sometimes a woman just needs a good cry - I feel better today, even with puffy eyes. I admit, I somethings think that I can handle everything. Even when my body starts reacting to the stress I think I am fine. Anyway, it was a good release and things seem brighter today.

Thank you for all your prayers for Olivia. We need you and are thankful for your walking with us.

Sandy for all of us.

Update on Olivia

Olivia had a much better night last night. Her temperature isn't quite normal yet, but it has stayed below 101 all day. I told her she didn't have to do school today but once I got the boys going she wanted to do school too. She is really congested and struggles to breathe. She said at supper tonight that it hurts when she swallows, but not so bad that she needs to go to the doctor. I am guessing that horrible tasting medicine she took when we first got here for a throat infection remains vivid in her mind and she didn't want to have to take it again.

We are more relaxed than when her temperature was 103, but still not sure what she is battling. I am guessing that if her throat is still sore tomorrow then we may take a trip to the doctor.

Pray for a good night of sleep and that we will have clear direction as to what, if any, course to take with her health.

Olivia

Olivia had a high fever (103) most of the night last night. She took several doses of Tylenol during the night. We gave her a dose of Tylenol this morning around 7:15 and she slept until 9:30. When she got up she didn't have a fever and it remained that way until 3:00pm. Then her fever returned. It doesn't seem to be as high and the Tylenol brings it down much faster than it did during the night. PTL!!

Just the boys of the family went to church today and there were lots of prayers for Olivia. There were also offers of help - one even offered to take us personally to their doctor. We feel cared for and thank the Lord for His care for us also. While Olivia doesn't seem to be over this yet we do pray that the worst of it is over and that tomorrow will see her improve.

We will let you know what tomorrow brings.

He Shoots, He Scores...

We went out this afternoon to watch Oscar's soccer game - he is a fellow from the youth group. It turns out the other team didn't show up so the game was cancelled, but that meant that our boys were able to spend nearly an hour on the cancha with Oscar and his friend Paul playing some two on two and so on. Let's just say the boys had an awesome time and we enjoyed watching them. We've posted some pictures of them below...

Please pray for Olivia - she is running a 102.4 fever this evening - seems she is battling something in her system since last night. We hope and pray it is not anything too serious. The fever comes down with Advil and then she seems to be quite content, but once the medicine wears off the fever returns! We'll keep you posted and appreciate your prayers!

Nose in a book?

We had a great evening yesterday as we hosted our small group in our home (although I think for most of them it may have felt strange to be in Alvira's house without her present). It feels very good to be developing some friendships with several couples and of course our kids enjoyed playing with other children in our home.

Grandma Katie sent a box of books three weeks ago and we got them on Friday - the kids were very excited to get some English short story books to read to go along with a few chapter books that we brought with us from Canada. Good thing we didn't pick up the mail until after school as they spent the rest of afternoon with their noses buried deep into the pages...

The next couple of weeks look to be quite busy ministry-wise but we are now looking forward to heading up to El Paso on the 12th of October for the staff meeting. While we had not planned nor expected to go up there at all during our time here, we see that it will be a good "break" for us, just to get away for a few days.
Sandy met Rosario, a widow across the street, who has invited us over to visit - it seems she is quite lonely so we hope to make some further contact with her in the next while. Another lady from a couple of blocks away stopped by yesterday to have us translate a card for her - apparently Alvira has done a great job of connecting in the neighbourhood and it is good to meet some of these people ourselves.

(All slide shows are supposed to end with a sunset, right?)

We hope you have a blessed weekend!

Rain, Laundry and Cooking

After a month we figured it was time to go visit the downtown plaza. So yesterday we went. Too bad it has taken us so long to get there. We parked and spent about an hour walking around looking in the shops. Gerald bought the boys soccer t-shirts from some of the Mexican soccer teams. Then we went to the plaza. While Gerald and I sat on a bench the kids ran around, tried to climb trees, and played on the gazebo structure. It was relaxing and very enjoyable. It made me sorry that it had taken us so long to get there.

Now it is Thursday night - Gerald is once again gone. That means it is computer time for me :) - as well as doing the night routine with the kids. Once again it has been a very busy day. I spent all afternoon in the kitchen and doing laundry (moving it out of the rain and then back into the sun). I made Banana Bread, brownies, and Raspberry Jello Salad. I also made meatloaf and mashed potatoes for supper. We are hosting the small group for supper tomorrow. I am actually nervous about it. I had a hard time deciding what to serve. Do I try something Mexican or stick with something I am comfortable with? In the end we decided on Spaghetti, the jello salad, garlic bread, corn and brownies for dessert. Tomorrow after school I will spend the afternoon cleaning. It starts at 8 but we usually don't eat until 9 pm with the study after. Gerald is leading tomorrow.

There were many more items we could have listed on the previous post, but one that needs to be mentioned is that it seems everybody has cell phones, far more than we see in Canada. Even when we were out in Santo Tomas many of the youth and adults alike had cell phones.

It poured for what seemed like a long time today. After the lightning had stopped the kids went outside and sat on the curb and played in the water as it ran down the street.

School it going very well. Olivia is starting to read simple words (of course she thinks she is doing amazing. She told Gerald today that she is good!) Andrew is doing very well with his math facts. Gerald has been quizzing him in the evenings. Caleb is adjusting to more work than last year. He has such beautiful handwriting.

Well, it is time to put my feet up and relax. I hope you have a good evening and a great weekend.

One Month.....

We have been here in Cuauhtemoc for one month now. What have I learned? I've learned to stop yelling at Gerald to stop when I see a stop sign, but he is looking at the green light (there are streets that have both). I've learned to stop jumping when we come to an intersection and the vehicles in the cross lanes seem to be within arms reach. I've learned that we can live without tv (although I've always known that - we just haven't ever done it). I've learned that the kids are great playmates - even though Andrew will say that he still misses his friends. I enjoy having Gerald around all day - even if he is holed up in the office working. I've gotten a hair cut for $4.00 - and it looks decent! The prices at the little store around the corner seem to be subject to the owners discretion. The roses are huge and beautiful! The lightning is spectacular and frightening! Drinking water is delivered right to our door and garbage is picked up twice a week. We have read Poacher's Beware, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, most of Charlotte's Web and The Candy Bombers. We have listened to hours of Adventures in Odyssey and spent every day together. It has been very good!

Gerald is out every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evening teaching and helping with the youth. We are out as a family on Friday nights for small groups. He has also preached three out of the five Sundays we have been here. He also teaches once a month in the Bible Institute.

Today I made cookies and Sour Cream Coffee Cake. I taught school and did five loads of laundry. I made lunch and my sweet husband did the dishes. I cleaned Olivia's whole room washed her bedding, moved her furniture around and organized her mounting collection of belongings. I swept and mopped her room (including the closet) and the hallway. By the time I put her to bed there will already be a dusty film on the floor. But for awhile it was clean.

Our days are full and the weeks seem to be flying by. We are blessed to be having this adventure. May God bless you and keep you! Thank you for your interest and for your prayers.

16 de Septiembre

Today is Independence Day here in Mexico - while we didn't go out to watch the fireworks last night, nor will we likely go downtown to listen to all the "Viva Mexico" shouts, this is certainly an important day for the Mexicans. Nearly 200 years ago they were freed from the rulership of Spain - we are here to help the believers proclaim the gospel message to their fellow countrymen so that they can experience true freedom in Christ!

(At a local park a few blocks from home...)

(Caleb doing some ironing on Dad's shirt this morning before church...)

(Olivia is learning how to do her own hair - the big pink clip in the middle is her crown...)

It was good to be back in our home church here in Cuauhtemoc again this morning - we are slowly building relationships with these folks as we improve our Spanish!

I told you there were spiders in the cupboards...

We understand that the file of the video we posted of our home last time was a bit large for some of your computers to download so we decided to take some pictures instead and assume that they will download easier - let us know how it works!

The black widow, found by Roxie, our dog, in the hallway of our house, confirms that we need to be a little more careful when we reach down to pick something up off the floor or put on our shoes - no concerns so far.

We discovered the other day while in Chihuahua that homeschooling is against the law here in Mexico so the folks in the church are quite taken/skeptical about this thing we are doing. However, they also admit that their public school system leaves much to be desired and so perhaps there was some envy mixed in as well, who knows? All we know is that our kids are doing great in school this year and yet sometimes get a little bored because there are so few kids they have connected with due to some reasons we've talked about before. Sandy is, however, doing a great job of keeping them occupied with games, projects, listening to CD stories and so on.

We were gone from our "home" church here in Cuauhtemoc for the last two weeks so we are all looking forward to being there this coming Sunday. I get to preach again!

Tonight we are having our small group Bible study again - pray for us as we connect with Mario & Edna, the couple that needs to come to know the Lord! Tomorrow we are having Don & Minna in our home for supper - we are looking forward to that. They are also bringing along some mail that came in to El Paso - we are also looking forward to that.

Speaking of mail, Andrew received two birthday cards in the mail this week - thanks Grandma Katie and Auntie Audrey! They only took around 2 weeks to get here - pretty awesome!

Have a wonderful weekend!
- Gerald

Ka Chow (Lightening McQueen from the "Cars" movie...)

We had a wonderful day yesterday in Chihuahua city. We joined the brethren in the Fuente de Vida church for Sunday School and Worship Service. It was a wonderful blessing to introduce my family to all these dear folks who were my "family" when I lived there a dozen years ago.
We spent the afternoon at Aldo & Rebeca's sisters' house where a large number of the family members gathered (as they apparently do almost every Sunday) and ate lunch, did tons of catching up in our visiting and watched the kids play and interact with the Aldo's nieces and nephews.

(The kids on the church roof looking down - it reminded them about the Bible story where the friends lowered the man through a hole in the roof so Jesus could heal him.)

(Gerald talking with Alex before the church service.)

(L-R: Sandy, Rebeca, Aldo (standing) and his mother!)

Before we headed back to Cuauhtemoc we decided to stop in at Walmart one more time to pick up a few items. The kids spent some of the money that Grandma Reimer gave them before we left Canada. A stop for supper at McDonald's was met with huge "thank yous" from the kids!
We got home around 8:00 p.m. and got the kids to bed. Around 10:00 p.m. a HUGE thunderstorm came rolling through and we had some VERY intense lightening and a deluge of rain before the storm finally moved on. Let's just say that when the thunder immediately follows after the lightening, before your eyes even have a chance to adjust, then you know the storm is close by - the hydro went out for a while and car alarms were going off everywhere from the loud booms of thunder. Amazingly the kids slept through it all.
This morning Sandy did school with the kids again and later she expects to spend most of the afternoon doing more school prep for the coming weeks, laundry, cleaning and meal prep! She is also meeting with Senora Nena, her tutor, this afternoon to go downtown and do some shopping.

New Team Members!

Yesterday, on Andrew's birthday, we had a visit from some missionaries who work in the Sierra Madre mountains with Tarahuamara Indians (friends of Scott & Elisa Peters). They had come to town to get supplies - it is always great to connect with folks who are doing the Lord's work!

Then a few hours later we had a visit from our newest team members - Don & Minna Thiessen. While they will be working with the Low German churches, we are still so blessed to have them join us on the field here. Their term is considerably longer then our short 5 months, but we are still so glad to be able to support one another.

(Don & Minna in front of their home - we enjoyed a wonderful visit and lunch with them on Saturday)

Last night at our small group Bible study we welcomed a new couple, Mario & Edna. It appears, from his many questions last night that Mario is not a follower of Christ. It was a great evening of interaction and we would ask you to pray for him as we continue to meet (next Friday the study will be in their home).

Tomorrow we head off to Chihuahua to join the "Fuente de Vida" church for their worship service - I will be sharing the message. We are excited to connect with Aldo & Rebeca, the pastoral couple, whom we have not seen in a long time. I told the kids today that Aldo has been one of the best friends I have ever had so we can't wait to spend the day with them.

Sandy was excited because today we were able to finally find brown sugar. She has been looking for it since we got here. We also found farmer sausage in a Low German-owned store - we enjoyed the sausage tonight for supper!

May the Lord bless you as you worship Him tomorrow in your own churches!

Feliz Cumpleanos Andres!

Today is Andrew's 8th birthday!
We are so proud of our son and are blessed to see how he is growing in his walk with the Lord. He is a young man who has a huge heart, is kind and generous and loves to learn. He is doing wonderful in school and is a great "big brother" to Caleb and Olivia. We love him very much.
He opened some presents this morning and so these pics show his "haul," which includes a cowboy hat, a Calgary Flames jersey (how did we get that here in Mexico?), a sling shot and some other leather goods.

Dad Reimer, our prayers are with you today as you have your doc appointment!

Blessings!

Field Trip

We decided to take the day off from school and take a field trip to Chihuahua. We left around 9:00am. It took about 70 minutes to get there. Gerald took us by the house where he used to live and the church where he worked. Then we headed off to Walmart with a list in hand. While we still seemed to find things to buy one thing we couldn't find was pretzels. We bought something we thought was brown sugar - now we are not so sure that's what it is. We will have to taste it to see. We also picked up something for Andrew's birthday which is on Friday. I won't say what it is because he likes to read the blog.

We stopped at Office Depot to pick up ink for the printer and then went to lunch at Applebees.

Next we headed off to the downtown market area. We had a lot of fun there looking at everything. Andrew spent his birthday money from Grandma Katie on a cowboy trinket (it is too hard to explain). Olivia and Caleb also got something. Olivia got a cute princess box and Caleb talked his dad into a wooden cobra snake. He was able to get it only on the promise that it would NEVER EVER appear in his mother's room. We spent some time browsing around, looking in shops and eating ice cream. What a great day! It was fun to relax, see some of Chihuahua, and enjoy some casual time.

As we were leaving the city Gerald took us by the arena where he once tried bull fighting when he lived in Chihuahua - the boys thought that was SOOOO cool!

Tomorrow it is back to school for the kids and I and Gerald to the computer to get the devotional ready for prayer meeting. Have a great evening.

Try, Try Again!

Today was laundry day after our weekend away. We had a lot of dirty clothes - well, I wouldn't have thought it was a lot back in Canada, but it takes a lot longer here so it seems like more. So, Gerald was helping me today since we were trying to do school at the same time. We just got them on the line and they were beginning to dry when it started to rain. We ran out and took them off the line just to realize that it was just a little sprinkle. By then I had them all sorted out on the beds and couches to dry. So, I took the ones that were still really wet and hung them back up on the line.

This afternoon I made brownies. Caleb and Olivia wanted to help me. Our first try ended up on the floor. A good lesson about holding on to the bowl while we are stirring. Thankfully we only had the flour and sugar in it and not much fell on the floor. We got them finished and in the oven. I went to take them out at the proper time. I opened the door - grabbed the pan - and as I was taking it out spilled it all over the rack, bottom of oven and floor. What a huge mess! Apparently, while the pan fits into the oven, the end of the rack that tilts up caused the brownies to all run to one end. One end was very done and the end that had most of the brownies was still runny. So we cleaned up and started again. This time they looked and smelled delicious. Time to make the frosting. Well, something didn't turn out with the frosting either. The frosting soaked into the brownies which are now a soggy gooey mess. Gerald and the kids think they taste delicious, but really, it is a mess.

Life is kind of like that isn't it. It doesn't always go as we would like or as we plan. Gerald is reading a book called Don't Waste your Life by John Piper. He read me this line the other night. "The Christian life is a painful life. Not joyless. But not painless either." For me it has been a day of trying to get things done and ending up doing them several times. Not painful, but seemingly endless attempts of the same thing. Kind of frustrating sometimes. And then I think about how many times I seem to have to learn the same Spiritual lesson. And my Jesus is trying to teach me over and over - the same thing. Endlessly and yet patiently prodding me on forever forward.

On the other hand I had a great time of meeting with my Spanish helper today. Last week I was so frustrated afterward. Today I could see some progress and was encouraged. (poco a poco)

Maybe I'll try apple pie tomorrow. We were given a wooden crate full of apples. Hopefully the first attempt will be successful.

Moving forward,

Sandy

Gun Shots in Mexico

The caretakers of the camp we stayed at invited us over for supper last night. While the boys were outside playing soccer with their 7 year old son named Andrew (Andrew was pretty excited about that), Sandy was inside the house helping Chema get supper ready while I was chatting with Victor, her husband.
Suddenly a car pulls up (we had yet to eat supper and it was around 9:00 p.m. and pitch black out there in the country) and the people in the car inform our hosts that her father has been shot and they need to get to the hospital to help with his care. So they politely say goodbye and we are left to eat supper in their house alone as they take off into the night. Having given us a key to lock up their house after we were done, we ate, did the dishes and then headed off to the dormitory for night, praying that God would be taking care of this situation. (Chema and Sandy at her house.)

This morning we go over to their house and learn that the ambulance had taken her father to Cuauhtemoc (a little over an hour drive), but he was already back in Santo Tomas in his own home. He was not the target of the man who was shooting (the shooter and he were actually in the same police car as they took them both to town 15 minutes away - the shooter apologized to her father saying that he didn't mean to shoot him - the bullets were meant for a couple of other men - how kind of him), but the bullet of one of his many shots ricocheted off a wall, struck him in the front part of his hip and came out his back end -Chema actually found the bullet in his cowboy boot at the hospital - it did not have enough energy to go out the back of his pants so it fell down into his boot.
Of course this morning it was the talk of the town as well as during the church service. Chema and her family were very thankful that it didn't turn out worse (it looks like he will recover just fine - they are concerned about infection) but were also praying that her father would think about this seriously and give his life over to the Lord.
Chema was to teach the children during Sunday School (all the kids are in one class) but she was taking care of her father so Sandy and I helped run the class and then later on in the service I preached. The kids did amazing once again as we arrived at the church at 10:00 a.m. and by the time the service was done it was after 1:00 p.m.
The church then had a lunch "disco" meal, which we enjoyed while the kids spent lots of time playing with the other Mexican kids - of course Olivia was the centre of attention with her very blond hair.
Some of the many pictures posted include a ride in the back of a pick-up truck out to Victor's pasture to look at his horses and "burros," which our three kids had a chance to "ride." We also went on an hour hike this afternoon along a dry "riverbed." The boys came across a skeleton of a small animal - Andrew thinks it might be a fox or a coyote - they were pretty excited. We let them keep the skull, much to their mother's delight.
We have more stories to tell, but most of all we are thankful for the blessings we experienced and the safety in travel.

How Can Rain Cause Phone Problems?

Because, as the Telmex phone company worker told us when he came to fix our phone yesterday afternoon, there is a certain type of bird here in the region that likes to peck holes into the phone lines and then when the rains come and water gets inside the lines, they get rusty and thus the poor connection and tons of static.
I reported our problem with the phone company on Monday and yesterday they came to fix it - now we have a clear phone line again...until it rains again, I suppose.

So yesterday evening we went to our first small group Bible study (at Herman and Claudia Sawatzky's house, for those of you who know some of these folks). They are a mixed couple, the fellow is a German Mennonite man and the lady is Mexican. They have three children, a little older than ours, but because they speak some English, our kids had an awesome time playing there, for which we are thankful. They have basically only had each other to play with since we arrived and so it was good for them to connect with some other kids.
(Why don't they connect with the neighbourhood kids, you ask? Ideally that is what we would like but it seems to us that these folks don't hang around out on the street like I remember they did in Chihuahua when I lived there or from what Sandy remembers from her days in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. So, as foreigners, it has been tough to find any natural connections outside of church for them to connect - it seems at the local parks is where we encounter the most opportunities, but the language barrier is still there.)
So we had our own supper at 6:30 at home and then went to the Bible study, which was supposed to start at 8:00. When we arrived, the lady had prepared supper for us to eat...so we ate supper, again, at their house...nothing like two suppers in one day to help the diet! Our study only began at around 9:15 and so we only got home around 10:30 p.m. - well past the kids normal bedtime. But they were content none-the-less because of their time with some "new" friends.
We are planning on leaving today for Santo Tomas, to hang out at the camp there for the rest of the day and then to go to their church in the morning to serve and encourage the believers. We are all looking forward to getting out of the city and going to the open space of the country for a day - the kids need a place to run and get their energy out - our small patio here in Cuauhtemoc just doesn't compete with our spacious backyard in Steinbach.

Enjoy the long weekend!
